Athlete Categorisation Summary Dashboard
This dashboard aims to support the high performance network in providing a snapshot of their respective sport/NIN's pool of categorised athletes.
If you work for an NSO, the data will automatically filter to show you your sport's data. Please contact the Sports Intelligence & Analytics team (SI&A) via ssidata@ausport.gov.au if you think you can see data that does not belong to your sport, or if you think you can't see all the data that you should.
NEW FEATURES

Improvements in development
The SI&A team is currently working on the following enhancements:
- Adding a visual in the Historic Trends & Insights page which shows average length of time in category based on sport/gender/para status filters
Sport Summary
The sport summary gives a high-level overview of categorisation. It provides a breakdown of athletes by category, gender, age, movement (or status) and supporting NIN. The page can be filtered by sport, gender, round, para status, NIN and category using the panel on the left hand side.
The video below provides a brief overview of the page's functionality. Detailed descriptions of each visual are provided below also.
Summary Panel
Number of athletes in each category. Hovering over each number will show a table of who these athletes are. Note: the table may be too large to be displayed in the tooltip, in which case it is recommended to apply the relevant filters in the Ath Cat Query Tool.
Note: decategorised athletes are included in all other visuals on this page except for the Athletes per NIN plot.
Athlete Categorisation Numbers by Gender
The number of categorised athletes by gender and category.
Age Distributions
The age distribution plot has two options:
- Distribution by age group (default) - best for understanding the age demographics across categories for athletes in a sport.
- Distribution by exact age - best for identifying outliers, clusters or invalid data.
These options can be toggled using the blue button in the top right hand corner of the plot.
Categorisation Movement Since last Round
Summarises how athletes have moved through the framework relative to their last corresponding record in the dataset.
Note, this plot is likely to report different numbers to the Dynamic Status plot on the Historic Trends & Insights page. See info button on that plot for explanation.
Athletes per NIN
Distribution of athletes by NIN. These numbers do NOT count decategorised athletes from the selected round.
Single Athlete View
The single athlete view provides an overview of an individual athlete's historical categorisation. The page can be filtered by sport and name.
Summary Panel
Shows the athlete's CURRENT category, NIN and coach.
Athlete Progression
Shows the historical categorisation of the athlete as well as their age for future Summer Olympic Games.
Categorisation Information of Athlete
Detail of the athlete's historical categorisation. Hover over the commentary column to see the entire commentary if it is cut off.
Ath Cat Query Tool
This page allows users to return a highly customisable list of categorised athletes. The list is automatically sorted alphabetically by sport and then name, but users can click the header to sort by that corresponding column instead. The filters on this page are:
- Sport
- Gender
- Para status
- NIN
- Start Round - see note 1 below
- End Round - see note 1 below
- Initial Cat
- End Cat
The filtered table can be downloaded by clicking the Excel icon in the top-right hand corner of the page (ensure you select the 'Query Tool' and CSV format options in the dialogue box - see screenshot).
You can see the commentary for an athlete by hovering over the commentary column. Alternatively, you can see an athlete's Single Athlete View by clicking on their row in the table.
Note 1 - this page defaults to show ALL athletes with a record in the selected End Round. Therefore, an athlete without a record in the Start Round will display as 'No Category' for that round.
Note 2 - if this page was navigated to from the Historic Trends & Insights page, then some background filters may still be applied when trying to apply your own filters from the left hand panel. Clicking the 'Reset Filters' button in the top right corner will erase these background filters (specifically, it will return the initial and end category filters to 'All'). See the video and explanation below for more detail.
In the example above, the user navigates to the Ath Cat Query Tool from the Historic Trends & Insights page by selecting Newly Categorised athletes from 2022 to 2023. They export this list of athletes. They then want to export which athletes progressed from Emerging and Developing to Podium Potential, however, they are unable to do so due to background filters. They clear these filters using the 'Reset Filters' button and then apply the necessary filters from the left hand panel.
Alternatively, they could also have returned to the Historic Trends & Insights page and selected the appropriate cells in the throughput matrix to navigate from.
Historic Trends & Insights
This pages looks at trends of how athletes have historically progressed through the framework. It can be filtered by sport, gender, para status and NIN. You can also choose the initial and end round to compare at the top of the page.
Note: the initial round must be before the end round for the visuals to display any results.
The SI&A team is currently working on including the ability to select all currently categorised as the end category.
Dynamic Status
Summarises how athletes have moved through the framework between the selected initial and end rounds. Hover over a bar to see the definition of the status and the corresponding cells on the throughput matrix.
You can see the list of athletes that fall in a particular status by clicking on the bar (or holding CTRL and clicking multiple bars) and then clicking the hyperlink that appears in the tooltip (see video below).
Note, this plot is likely to report different numbers to the Categorisation Movement Since Last Round plot on the Sport Summary page. See info button on the plot for explanation.
Throughput
This matrix provides the number of athletes that have moved between each specific category for the selected initial and end rounds. The shading corresponds to the % figures. The matrix has 2 views:
-
Backward-looking - the % sums are column-based. It shows the distribution of where athletes from the selected end round were categorised in the initial round. The % numbers in each column will add to 100%.
- Eg, in the first screenshot below, the shading tells us that the majority of Emerging, Developing and all athletes in 2023 were not categorised in 2020|2, almost half of Podium Potential and Podium athletes were not categorised and Podium respectively and, despite a much more even spread, almost 85% of Podium Ready athletes were either not categorised or Podium Potential and higher in 2020|2.
-
Forward-looking - the % sums are row-based. It shows the distribution of where athletes from the initial round were categorised in the end round. The % numbers in each row will add to 100%.
- Eg, in the second screenshot below, the majority of uncategorised and Podium athletes in 2020|2 ended up as Emerging or Podium respectively in 2023. The distributions in all other categories are less skewed, but most athletes still either retained their categorisation or were promoted one level.
Note that the filters in both examples are identical and the first number in each cell is identical. The only thing that has changed is the interpretation of the % figures and corresponding shading.
These definitions are also communicated via the info button and in the tooltips for each cell. The two views can be toggled using the button at the top-right hand corner of the matrix.
Like the dynamic status graph, you can see the individual athletes that fall in a particular cell by clicking on the cell (or holding CTRL and clicking multiple cells) and then clicking the hyperlink that appears in the tooltip.
% Difference by category, round-by-round
Expresses the percentage change in athletes for each category across consecutive rounds. Note, 2021|1 has been excluded to keep results valid due to very few sports categorising in round 2021|1.
A tabular view of the % changes in overall athletes can be found at the bottom of the % difference by category & sport/NIN matrix.
% Difference by Category & Sport/NIN
Shows the sport/NIN breakdown of percentage changes in athletes per category, round-by-round. The shading corresponds to the proportional change (greater change = darker shade). You can toggle between sports and NIN view using the radio buttons in the top-right corner of the matrix. Similarly, 2021|1 has been excluded due to very few sports categorising in that round.
Subtotals for athletes in each sport/NIN are provided, as well as the grand total at the bottom of the matrix.
Submission Calendar
This page shows when and how often sports have submitted athletes for categorisation each round. It can be filtered by sport, gender, para status, rounds and category.
By Month/NSO - Submission Date Calendar
Calendar of when sports complete athlete categorisation submissions each round. The AIS currently requests that sports perform one round of categorisation each year; the shading aims to highlight where sports may have completed multiple categorisations in a round.
Note 1 - if an athlete has multiple records in each round, the calendar will only display their most recent record. Use the plot on the right to determine if sports have done multiple submissions for athletes in a particular round.
Note 2 - sports may perform separate categorisation submissions for different disciplines, pathways vs podium potential and higher athletes, able and para programs or male and female squads. Use the filters provided to determine if this applies to a sport with multiple categorisation months (see clicp below).
Note 3 - the dates recorded are based on when an athlete record is entered into the AMS, not when a submission is endorsed by the AIS.
Note 4 - if a sport does not appear for a particular round, this means that sport did not categorise any athletes in that round.
% athletes with duplicate entries (no. athletes in brackets)
Shows the proportion of athletes in the selected round that have multiple categorisation records in that round. The threshold for amber/red proportions has been set lower than in the calendar view to reflect that there are not many cases where an athlete can justifiably have multiple records in a round (eg, retirement, appeals, progression from pathways to representative streams in sports that have seperate submissions for these streams).
The tooltip tracks how many athletes are unaccounted for in each sport and round. A positive number indicates there are more athletes appearing in that round than are expected (eg, because an athlete may not have been included in the previous round), and a negative number indicates there are athletes missing (eg, because they had a record in the previous round but were not categorised in the next one).
Note - just because a sport's overall number in a round is close to zero does not mean they have accounted for every athlete. For example, if a sport has 20 unexpected records and 20 missing records, then their overall unaccounted athletes will be zero. You can click on the graph to be taken to the Validation & Completeness page for that sport, where you can verify if this is the case or not (see clip below, noting the tooltip says zero unaccounted athletes for triathlon in 2023).
Validity & Completeness
This view provides a detailed depiction of each athlete's record validity in the Athlete Categorisation Dataset. It can also be used to view which athletes should be included in discussions for upcoming athlete categorisation meetings. You can sort each round to bring invalid records to the top by clicking on the column header and then clicking the sort option (see video).
The view determines the validity of records based on consecutive rounds that have been filtered in the visualisation. For instance, given very few sports categorised in 2021|1, many athletes will appear as having an invalid record in both 2021|1 (missing record) and 2021|2 (unexpected record, given the absence of one in 2021|1). However, filtering out 2021|1 will change most of these flags to become valid, because it will consider 2020|2 and 2021|2 as consecutive rounds.
Note - the view is automatically filtered to display active athletes, which are determined to be athletes with a categorisation record in the AMS within the last 1.5 years. Use the appropriate filter if you wish to view all athletes.
